Waclaw Sierpiński was born on 14 March 1882 in Warsaw, Russian Empire (now Poland). Sierpiński’s most important work is in the area of set theory, point set topology, and number theory. In the set theory he made important contributions to the axiom of choice and to the continuum hypothesis. Waclaw Sierpinski died on 21 October 1969 in Warsaw, Poland.
